“Ripple Effects,” a Wild Cards novella published on Tor.com, features John Montaño, a/k/a/ the Candle: a man with powerful ace abilities, and a secret in his past that comes back to haunt him, when an old lover plots his revenge.

Up Against It (written under a pseudonym, M. J. Locke) is the first book in a new science fiction series, WAVE. A disaster wipes out most of the asteroid colonists’ source of air, energy, and water. Jane, Phocaea’s resource allocation chief, and Geoff, a young man whose life is irrevocably altered by the disaster, must save their world and turn the tables on those who mean to destroy them.

The book received a starred review in Publishers Weekly, and was an Otherwise Honor pick in 2012. It’s due for re-release in 2022 as a Tor Essentials book, and will have a foreword from one (or rather, two) of my favorite authors, James S.A. Corey*!

“True North,” in Gordon van Gelder’s Welcome to the Greenhouse, came out in January 2011 from O/R Press. It’s the turn of the 22nd century, and climate change has come calling with a vengeance. Bear, a giant old man, scrapes out an existence amid the ruins of civilization. But he’s just going through the motions. He’s fed up with everything and is ready to follow his wife (and the other 99.9% of humanity) into oblivion. But his life is changed forever when a young woman he meets just won’t take extinction for an answer.

WORKS IN PROGRESS

I’m working on a near-future novel, tentatively titled Child Left Behind. Here is a link to my reading of the first chapter, at the fabulous SF in SF reading venue. The story is about Hannah Song, a young woman who was left behind on Earth as a child when her parents took off for Mars. Now her parents have died, and her little brother—the first human born on Mars—has become a political football between rival world powers. The only one who has a personal connection to him is Hannah, and she hates his guts, because he grew up with everything she ever wanted.

I’m also at work on the sequel to Up Against It, tentatively titled Out of Bounds. The story features atheist prophet Jane Navio, the Viridian shapeshifting hacker Vivian-Gabriel Waithira-Macharia, and the feral artificial sapient, BitManSinger, from the first book. Jane’s nemesis, Martian crime boss Elwood Ogilvie will be there, and Jane’s husband Ngo Minh Xuan is also likely to make an appearance, giving us a glimpse of ominous happenings out among the faraway stroids.
